“Do you remember being a child? Sitting on a carpet with bunch of friends and playing with Lego? Building things freely – brick by brick together. It was great. We were all creative while playing.
But then we grew up and moved to different corners of the world. Time goes by, technology changes, but we still need to be creative. Why did playfulness disappear from our tools? Creativity is about playing: freely and openly. It’s about creating things in new ways.
Today we work with multimedia – and we want to work playfully. So we have started to build a multimedia playground. We call it Brickflow. It is a web application where content creators can connect videos, images and sounds from anywhere from the web – on a shared virtual whiteboard. With an open playground creativity can be democratized.” [Source: Brickflow movie ]
Brickflow’s story started with a dream and with questioning the status quo. Three friends – Mihaly Borbely, Peter Langmar and Tamas Kokeny – got together and had some pizza & beer. They started talking – about different things. Suddenly there was a question: ‘why can’t we’ that evolved into ‘how could we‘. There was a vision and a dream – and where there is a will, solution is not far either.
Brickflow is a web application to develop, discuss and tell multimedia stories on a shared whiteboard. It is the Google Docs for multimedia. Millions of people share content online, but they struggle to work together on their stories and to share it in inspiring forms. For multimedia storytelling photos, videos and soundtracks need to be collected and connected. Today it is difficult to involve collaborators or let others follow the development. As a result, most people end up working on their desktops and using email to cooperate.
Until recently, the web was the place for consuming and sharing multimedia, but content creation happened offline, behind closed doors. Cooperating online is a rapidly growing segment. Brickflow is the next step: it democratizes creativity with a creative platform.
With Brickflow, building multimedia stories becomes just as easy and playful. You can collect, organize and curate your material on a shared, virtual whiteboard, add content from YouTube and SoundCloud, or any text and image. You can invite your friends or crowd-source to play together in real time and build your stories or collections by putting bricks together. Brickflow targets the so-called prosumers (professional or producer consumers), however there is a huge interest shown for Brickflow by creative agencies worldwide.
During summer 2012 the team managed to make others believe in their vision and successfully raised $10’000 via the crowd-funding site Indiegogo. Fueled by the trust of its supporters, Brickflow went full speed ahead: in November 2012 it was picked as one of the hundred teams worldwide that can participate in the Start-Up Chile program meaning additional equity-free financial funding as well as a six months stay in Santiago de Chile, the ‘South American Silicon Valley’. Furthermore, a few days ago Brickflow was selected to be part of another very prestigious start-up accelerator program, the ‘Startup Wise Guys‘ in Tallinn, Estonia, that also comes with further funding, valuable mentorship programs and the possibility to be supported by well-respected industry leaders.
In the meantime the team is working on developing Brickflow further by adding new functions and features to the software constantly. Obviously, team work and determination is one of the keys to success. Shortly after the start of the project and realizing the potential of Brickflow, team members have decided not to waste any time and they moved into an apartment to be able to work 24/7 on Brickflow. To make their dreams come true. And that creative grownups can play again – this time with the help of Brickflow.
Very inspiring – the story as well as their product. “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” [Steve Jobs]
