From Rainwater To Drinking Water Through ‘Bio-Concrete’

An article – among the very first posts on this blog – had already been dedicated to IVANKA, the Hungarian Queen of concrete. The company has been around for about a decade now and is considered one of the pioneers worldwide making concrete desirable in interior design, fashion and lifting its image that concrete is today perceived as a lifestyle category.

IVANKA has taken its vision to the next level and introduced a new project called Water of Life at the Milan Design Week in April 2014 where it showcased RAINHOUSE, a 1:1 demo model of its newly developed system. With this move the company is adding another characteristic to its brand and that being social and environmental responsibility.

“Water of Life is a revolutionary project developed to collect rain and turn it into the highest quality drinking water filtered through a special bio-concrete system. A real innovation opening to global perspective that markedly transcends the current practice of sustainable development.”

“Bio-concrete has a pH neutral orientation and bio-compatible influence on the water. Both the technical specification of this material and the process itself distinguishes this new system from the traditional ways of rainwater collection. The specific technology allows filtering raw rain only physically in a strictly natural way without chemicals so the equipment can produce the highest quality, sun-distilled drinking water.”

While the concept is still being tested at company founders’ property close to Lake Balaton Uplands National Park, visitors at the Milan Design Week were invited to discover the innovation and to experience the drinking water gained from collected and properly filtered rainwater, pouring down from a huge cloud shaped container.

It is certainly no news that currently the weather system shows signs of extremity – being drought for a longer time followed by heavy rains at all possible locations of the world. While at a few places rainwater is utilized for watering plants or to flush toilets, the larger part of rainwater literally goes down the drainer at best, if the sheer quantity of it does not cause natural disasters. Even though the innovation by IVANKA cannot avoid such disasters, it still can change the way we erect buildings in the future. Taking this innovation into account, we could have the option in the near future whether we choose to drink tap water or filtered rainwater.

IVANKA attracted a lot of visitors including industry insiders at the Milan Design Week with its superbly designed stand and certainly initiated a discussion about the topic. Once the tests will be finished and the results convince trendsetting architects, IVANKA will open up totally new horizons in the area of rain water management in urban areas with its innovative concept.
